10 Underrated Horror TV Shows From The '90s You Totally Forgot About
6. Friday The 13th: The Series
Admittedly, Friday the 13th: The Series was more of a show that ended in the 1990s than one that thrived. Luckily for macabre fans, their late-night horror cravings were satiated for a few years by the beauty of syndication.
A polarizing endeavor, the series was designed to extend the Friday the 13th universe without riding the coattails of its silver screen counterparts. On the one hand, you had diehard Jason fans disappointed that the show had almost nothing to do with their favorite slasher franchise. On the other, a new audience fell in love with how the series offered a unique horror anthology.
Viewers followed the relatives of an antique store owner as they tried to track down various evil relics. Their predecessor made a deal with the devil to sell cursed goods but met his fate after failing to hold up his end of the bargain. Now his niece and her cousin had to clean up his mess. While the focus remained on the relatives, the show entertained by head-hopping from one antagonist to the next, making each episode feel intriguing and fresh.
If the show had found a way to please the Jason fanatics as well, it might have very well survived a few more years. Regardless, it certainly left an impact, as shows like Freddy's Nightmares quickly tried to follow its lead. What makes Friday the 13th standout is that it still holds up reasonably well today, whereas many of the copycats became hokey at best.
