10 Underrated Horror TV Shows From The '90s You Totally Forgot About
5. Freddy's Nightmares
It wasn't long after Friday the 13th: The Series aired that the twisted masterminds behind A Nightmare on Elm Street decided to get in on the action. Thus, Freddy's Nightmares was born.
What stood out first was that, unlike its rival, the show actually featured Krueger in full form. He mostly served hosting duties early on, but halfway through the first season, a little more Freddy showed up in the new Springwood tales.
A few factors prevented Freddy's Nightmares from being on the same level as its predecessor. First, the monster fad was waning in the early '90s. Second, after the releases of A Nightmare on Elm Street 4 and 5, Freddy had been reduced from a blood-lusting boogeyman to a sweater-wearing jester who told perverted dad-jokes. Lastly, not every episode left the best impression on newer viewers. Maybe it was because there was a lot of work going into the films, but there seemed to be a bit of a quality control issue with the show from time to time.
However, none of that took away from the fact that Freddy's Nightmares still offered quite a few gems. Perhaps the biggest hidden treasure from the series was "No More Mr Nice Guy", the origin story of one Frederick Krueger. If that's not enough to convince you, a plethora of horror legends helped make the series like Tom McLoughlin and Tobe Hooper, who filmed the pilot. Robert Englund continued his classic role as Freddy, and even Brad Pitt showed up one time.
