1. Blackadder Goes Over The Top - Blackadder Goes Forth
Regardless of the frankly ridiculous attempt to ban Blackadder Goes Forth from schools, "I mean, who would've noticed another madman around here?" might be the most ingenious line ever uttered in a comedy. It is both indicative of the hilarious characters that Edmund Blackadder has around him, and of the harrowing situation that he faces. The end of Blackadder Goes Forth is similarly brilliant, with so much to admire. There's the accepting glances between bitter rivals Blackadder and Darling, the fact that Baldrick has a cunning plan - that we never find out - and Hugh Laurie's incredible performance, admitting that actually, he's a bit frightened. It's a hard-hitting statement on the pointlessness of war, with superlative acting matching a sparkling script; no one's interested in Baldrick's optimism, and everyone knows how this story's going to end. But fantastically, Blackadder Goes Forth doesn't make a song and dance about its ending, glamorising the characters: that final image of the field covered in poppies is a striking one, as it means so much more than the show, yet manages to encapsulate the whole point of it.
