10 Unexpected Sitcom Scenes That Made Us Bawl Our Eyes Out

2. Derek Finds His Dad - Derek

...And if you thought The Office was sad... Completing Ricky Gervais's hat-trick in this list, Derek really does play loose sometimes with the comedy tag it is typically given; it's a genuinely affecting program about a man who's too kind for his own good. He outlives most of his pensioner friends, and more than anything, he longs for a father figure. In the final episode of the first series as a wonderfully appropriate full-stop to the story arc, Derek's dad turns up at a friend's funeral. Initially, Derek can't forgive him for walking out on the family, and leaves the funeral without him, and it looks as if that is where the episode will end. But then Gervais pulls a master-stroke, and Derek has a hugely affecting change of heart, running back to his dad and greeting him with a hug. 'Fix You' by Coldplay plays in the background, as if you weren't crying already, but perhaps the most moving bit is back at the home, when he simply smiles and says "I've got a dad now."
