10 Unexpected Sitcom Scenes That Made Us Bawl Our Eyes Out

9. Jonah's Parting Shot - Summer Heights High

Chris Lilley is a masterful character actor, who in Summer Heights High played a private school girl, a camp drama teacher and a troubled Tongan teenager all to hilarious effect. Possibly his finest moment though came in the latter role as Jonah, an unruly boy being expelled by the titular school. Throughout the series, Jonah struggles with school and seems to run into a lot of fights with other pupils, and ultimately, towards the end, he gets into an argument with a teacher, and is asked to leave the school. Before he goes though, he returns to his remedial English class, where he's made a connection with his teacher Ms Palmer, and reads his story about how he's going to become a better reader. It's a moving moment for the show and crucially the impact is entirely unexpected; usually Jonah's immature and rebellious throughout the series, but in the final episode, Lilley shows him to be a multi-layered and perhaps misunderstood character. A greatly underrated performance.
