10 Unexpected Sitcom Scenes That Made Us Bawl Our Eyes Out

8. Andy's Big Brother Speech - Extras

Ricky Gervais has been one of the biggest draws in comedy since he redefined the parameters of British comedy (and ultimately American) with The Office, which showed off the comic writing skills that would ultimately lead naturally to success on stage. Beyond that ability, he's also a much-underrated actor. Sure, we all give him the credit where it's due for his comedic timing and his writing skills, but seldom is actually called "good at being an actor"; more often that not, he's lampooned for playing the same character in everything with slightly different costumes. Andy's Big Brother speech in Extras however demonstrates just what an emotive and powerful actor Gervais can be. You can see the anger in him bubbling throughout the episode, as he becomes further and further fed up with the state of celebrities, Big Brother and how he's not famous enough; eventually he breaks down and laments how sorry he is for neglecting Maggie. It's well-written, but it's the way that Gervais acts it, subtly mentioning all the things that annoy him before crying his eyes out on live TV. It's just one of many moving moments from his work, and one of the very best.
