Of the many things to thank David Tennant for, this one ranks fairly highly. The actor turned down an idea by Russell T Davies for a Christmas special that would have seen the Tenth Doctor visit Edinburgh. It's a city known for its dark underbelly, body snatchers, art, literature and scientific enlightenment. It also now dines out on the fact that J.K Rowling wrote the first few Harry Potter novels in various city cafes.

RTD's pitch was that the Doctor would find witches, wizards and all sorts of magical creatures running amok in the city. On further investigation, he would discover that the author J.K. Rowling had been taken over by an alien parasite which was making her imagination a reality. Tennant thought that it was too much like self-parody, and Doctor Who and Harry Potter fans had a lucky escape.

Can J.K Rowling even act? It would have been a hollow attempt to repeat the success of Kylie Minogue's appearance the previous year, but at least Kylie was an actor! Apparently, Russell had previously approached Rowling to write an episode of the revitalised series, but she turned him down.
