10 Unpleasant Facts About The Making Of Buffy The Vampire Slayer
4. Willow And Tara’s Kisses Weren’t Allowed
Willow and Tara’s relationship was ground-breaking at the time, as gay relationships were rarely depicted on screen. Whilst it’s a shame their romance ended in tragedy, fans of the show will always hold this relationship in high regard.
However, there aren’t many intimate moments between Willow and Tara during the early stages of their relationship due to the conservative standards of the time. Indeed, the network wouldn’t even allow the characters to kiss – at least to begin with. The WB had no quibbles with blood, violence, horror, and sexual affairs between men and women. But as far as they were concerned, any same-sex romance was a step too far.
Still, the fact the relationship existed at all was a step in the right direction, and as time went on, the network did allow Willow and Tara to be more intimate. In ‘The Body’, the two women have the first of many on-screen kisses.
Nowadays, same-sex relationships have been normalised. But it’s still strange to think this was such a big issue just twenty years ago.
