The Mystery: With such a focus on characters over mystery throughout the show its odd that some just managed to slip through the cracks. When the Tailies were introduced fans were rather ambivalent towards them until their interesting backstories were revealed. Best of all was Libby, whose reveal she had been in the same mental institution as Hurley was only topped by her unexpected death a couple of episodes later, coming before the mystery has been addressed at all. And after she popped up in a flashback to give Desmond the boat that took him to the Island, the mystery never appeared again. The Simple Solution: Its to do with her husbands death. The unofficial reason for this mystery lying dormant is that actress Cynthia Watros was arrested for a DUI during the shooting of Season 2, but as Libby was brought back for the Flashsideways purgatory it seems the writers just took this mystery as solved. When she gives Desmond the Elizabeth we learn she is a widow (oddly enough her former husband has the same name as Hurleys imaginary friend), so given the timeline (she was in Santa Rosa a year or two before meeting Desmond) its easy to conclude it was from the depression of losing her husband.
