10 ‘Unsolved’ Mysteries From Lost (That Have Really Simple Answers)
6. Why Did Walt Have Powers?
The Mystery: Originally meant to be a key character throughout the shows run time before Malcolm David Kelley hit puberty and began to age faster than was ever believable on the Island, Walt was the first of many characters to have some form of supernatural ability. Able to see future events, project himself over long distances and learn complicated skills very quickly, he embodies the shows early days of setting up mysteries with no goal really set out. Even though Kelley would pop up a couple more times in the show no real time was given to what was so special about him and why he had powers. The Simple Solution: He just did. Its a bit of a cop out, but this is the only reasonable answer. Back when his abilities were introduced the show was still in its Lord Of The Flies phase, so they stood out more. A couple of years later Miles was able to talk with corpses, Hurley could see ghosts and the whole show became a drive to save a magic light, making him pretty normal in the Lost world. Where the powers come from is kept pretty vague, but the suggestion is it has something to do with the electromagnetic power. As Walt spent a lot of time in Australia (where we know one of the pockets is) he probably developed his abilities from gradual exposure.
