10 ‘Unsolved’ Mysteries From Lost (That Have Really Simple Answers)

5. What Was The Sickness?

SicknessThe Mystery: The notion of The Sickness went through various iterations, with Danielle Rousseau presenting it as a form of madness, while Kelvin used it as a trick to keep Desmond from going outside of the Swan, but all these contradictory stories just had fans confused. The Island€™s healing nature only further complicated things and as season after season went by without any direct addressing of it, people were split between it being a lie in-world or a misleading mystery from the writers. The Simple Solution: It was The Man In Black (mostly). Most mysteries in Lost can be solved with this rationale, although it€™s unclear what the original intention was. We saw various versions of the sickness, but their identical name seems to be more a misleading play than an overarching link. The 'official' Sickness is one of The Man In Black€™s methods of controlling Jacob€™s candidates and probably his most forceful. Essentially mind control, it pits survivors of various wrecks against each other (although how that doesn't break €˜the rules€™ I don€™t know). Much of the confusion comes from Danielle€™s misunderstanding of the source; she doesn't connect the monster€™s attack and her crew€™s descent into madness. The other types of sickness are less fantastical; Kelvin€™s lie to Desmond seems to be part of Dharma€™s mind games while the childbirth complications are another real, if completely different, issue.
