10 Unused Star Trek Ship Designs We NEED To See
5. USS Aventine
The Vesta-class USS Aventine was designed by illustrator Mark Rademaker. It was one of several vessels named for the seven hills of Rome. Its captain is Ezri Dax and it has appeared, in this configuration, in the Star Trek novels. It has since been refit and made appearances in Star Trek Online.
The ship is outfitted with a slipstream drive, making it the fastest ship in service. The Destiny trilogy is perhaps the best example of the ship's versatility, helping to protect Starfleet from the Borg Armada while joining the Enterprise-E in exploring a network of transwarp tunnels that were allowing the Borg to invade en masse.
According to the timeline of the expanded universe, the ship should still be in service as of the early 25th century, which would bring it in line with season two of Star Trek: Picard. The design owes tribute to Doug Drexler's Enterprise-J, in that the nacelles and their struts are very thin and spindly compared to the rest of the vessel. The overall design is based on a Basking Shark, with at least one earlier version possessing ventral curving nacelles.
A fantastic design, this ship should no longer be confined to the novels and the game.
