Now and then, there comes a new series with such a strange premise that it could either be a big hit or a big miss. And HBO’s new limited series, The Third Day is one of those.

The series, consisting of 7 episodes, will be split into 3 acts. The first and third parts (consisting of 3 episodes each), will centre on a man and a woman’s individual journeys to a mysterious island, where they both become trapped.

The second part (the fourth episode in the middle) will be a huge experiment - it will be a live episode that will air as one continuous take, allowing viewers to have an “immersive experience” with the story.

It will be written by Dennis Kelly and directed (for the first 3 episodes) by Marc Munden, who were the team behind the criminally underrated Channel 4 series, Utopia. Other than that, the series will star Jude Law and Naomie Harris in the two lead roles, and the latter part of the series will be directed by Phillippa Lowthorpe, who directed the recent hit, Misbehaviour.

This looks like it could be a huge gamble for HBO, but with the talent behind the scenes, it might just work. The first episode has just aired at the time of writing, so there's never been a better time to jump in.
