10 Upcoming New HBO Series To Be Excited About

5. Gods And Secrets

The surprise isn't that HBO are making a superhero show, but rather that it took them so long to finally do one. Normally the lead the way, but on this they're following the trend, with comic-book series everywhere from traditional networks to Netflix. Once again, though, they may well be proving that even if others do it first, they do it best.

Adi Shankar, producer of The Grey and Dredd, but perhaps best known for his unlicensed shorts such as The Punisher: Dirty Laundry and Power/Rangers, will co-direct with frequent collaborator Stewart Yost. It'll be a darker take on the superhero story, which you'd expect from HBO, and although there are no characters directly taken from the comics, it is said to be heavily-based on Alan Moore's Watchmen series. That means looking at not only the people they protect, but the heroes - the Guardians of Justice in this case - themselves.

The cast is an odd one, featuring the likes of wrestler Diamond Dallas Page, Twilight duo Jackson Rathbone and Kellan Lutz, and former Bond girl Denise Richards. On any other channel that'd at best be scoffed at, and probably the cause for a few laughs, but with HBO you expect that they'll somehow manage to make it work.
