Liu Cixin's Hugo Award-winning sci-fi novel series The Three-Body Problem was long thought by many to be unfilmable, yet Netflix is currently in post-production on a big-budget adaptation from Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss.

Cixin's original 2008 novel has been consistently lauded for its ambitious ideas, while at the same time being a fairly slow, dense read that doesn't talk down to its readers.

Adapting that to a digestible TV show format will be extremely challenging, and so if it retains the essence of its source, it's sure to be a noodle-baking sci-fi series that demands a lot of its audience.

Much like The Peripheral, you'll want to put your phone away and pay close attention to what's going on - assuming, of course, that Benioff and Weiss haven't stripped the complexity away entirely and fashioned it into something more disposably "easy to watch."

But given that Game of Thrones was itself considered unadaptable for many years, one can certainly be mildly optimistic that, Thrones' torrid ending aside, Benioff and Weiss have the passion to adapt Cixin's story to the small screen in the tricky manner it deserves.

The Three-Body Problem will premiere on Netflix in 2023.
