10 Vikings Fates Worse Than Death
9. Living As A Former Legend
Legends come and go, and when telling their stories, you often hear the highlights. But, the truth is, once a person's most significant accomplishments are behind them, there's never a simple happy ending. That's certainly the case with this former Kattegat King, as the final years of his life seemed to bring everything crumbling down.
After raiding England, rising as the King of Kattegat, having a large family, attacking Paris and becoming an undisputed legend, Ragnar Lothbrok found himself past his prime. After disappearing for ten years thanks to an embarrassing loss in Paris, Ragnar returned to his former kingdom and was greeted with dejection and confusion.
After trying to convince his sons to join him on a raid to England, he found himself turned down by them all (except Ivar). He even tried to take his own life, thanks to the misery he was feeling at having lost the prestige he once had.
Overall, Ragnar made the choice to go to England, knowing it would be the end for him, as it was better to die with a semblance of respect rather than living as an old man with regrets.
