10 Ways Game Of Thrones Is Basically Modern-Day Britain

10. The North/South Divide

Let's get this one out of the way first as it's the most obvious similarity between Westeros and Britain: the North hates the South, and the South hates the North. Okay, so maybe hate is a strong term and both sides won't march into battle anytime soon, but there's general animosity that cross the the midway point of the country. It's not even totally clear where the line is drawn in Britain. For some, Birmingham and below qualifies as the South, while for the true northmen up in the lands of Newcastle, Sunderland and Middlesbrough, anywhere below Leeds is 'The South'. The bottom half of the country is where the money is, mostly in London, or King's Landing from the Westeros standpoint. Northerners mock the posh, snobby attitudes from the southerners, and their inability to handle the cold. Northern men and women are tough, and love life regardless of the finances. On the flip side, the southern folk look down their noses at the grim North, a desolate wasteland where nothing good can ever come. It's cold, it's harsh, it's generally not a nice place to be, portrayed by Winterfell's stony, grim appearance compared to the lavish capital. The southerners live the high life, wining and dining with the finest.
