Hollywood is a funny old world. Actors will frequently get cast in completely different roles than the one they were auditioning for, and Mad Men especially was the result of this character musical chairs. In a different world, January Jones wasn't the even-longer-suffering wife of Don Draper, but got the part of Peggy. Which wouldn't been quite as perfect casting as Elisabeth Moss, but might have spared audiences of her criminal under use in X-Men: First Class. Christina Hendricks auditioned for Don Draper's mistress Midge before taking the part of Joan. similar thing almost happened with Don, too, with Jon Slattery auditioning for the role that eventually went to Jon Hamm. Slattery wound up coming back as Roger Sterling instead, which is good, because nobody else would really work as Don Draper and nobody else could be trusted to do that scene where Sterling walks up all the stairs and then throws up. Vincent Kartheiser, meanwhile, only auditioned for Pete. My agents aren't delusional enough to think that I'm a Don Draper.
