10 Ways Modern Family Is Not Like Modern Families

1. They Don't Have To Deal With Real Issues

Okay, so this might seem like a bit of a catch-all after the previous nine, but at no point is there a real crisis in the family. As with a lot of comedies, other than the odd exception most episodes finish with all problems brought up in the episode solved within the episode. Major plot points last a season or so before they cease to matter. As with other points made, this isn't a complaint but a comparison. When the family wins a group therapy session, what issues do the couples have with each other? Jay finds Gloria too loud. Phil thinks that some of Claire's catchphrases are cringey. Cameron doesn't like it when Mitchell leaves the lights on. These are relatively petty issues, far removed from our world in which about half of all marriages end in divorce. Even issues the children face get resolved with ease. Haley drops out of college, but gets a dream job working in fashion. Alex doesn't get into her top college, but still gets into the California Institute of Technology. Luke, the more problem child in later seasons, gets arrested but the biggest way that impacts him is that he gets grounded.
