10 Ways Modern Family Is Not Like Modern Families

3. Big Age Differences In Marriage Are Rare

Jay and Gloria have a rather large age difference, with Jay being born in 1947 and Gloria being born in the early 70s. Generally speaking they're a happy couple, having a child Season 4 and doing a good job of raising him throughout the series. She doesn't have to work, and he's close to retirement, and all is well, Gloria's aggressive nature making her one of the only women who could really put Jay in line. Only 1% of married couples have an age gap where the husband is over 20 years older than the wife, making it one of the few ways in which Modern Family is actually further away from the 'traditional' family than the average family is. The average age difference is in fact a mere 2.3 years for heterosexual couples, with same-sex couples tending to have a much larger gap.
