Remember when Debra attempted a murder-suicide against Dexter? It was one of the few shocking moments in season 8 that could've potentially led to some gripping TV. Instead, as we discover here, it simply leads to more sitting around and talking in Dr Vogel's office.

It's strange that a supposed psychopath like Dexter spends so much time talking about his feelings given he himself once claimed he didn't have any. Regardless, the real Bay Harbour Butcher is understandably miffed with Deb for almost killing him. He even points out she nearly made young Harrison an orphan (which proves to be hilariously rich by the end of this season).

Unsurprisingly, Michael C. Hall and Jennifer Carpenter are on fine form here, carrying a once great show to keep it watchable. Charlotte Rampling also, to her credit, makes the most out of the topsy-turvy Vogel character despite the writing's shortcomings.

It's the plodding pace and tone of what should've been a suspenseful, high-intensity storyline that leaves this episode in the wilderness. Its flaws are only exacerbated with a storyline no one beyond maybe C.S. Lee could've possibly asked for: Masuka's daughter.

The Quagmire of the Dexter series is handed an aimless subplot about a surprise daughter from his days as a sperm donor. The subplot eats up vital TV time in the show's closing stretch, further hampering the already underdeveloped Brain Surgeon mystery that was meant to serve as the season's main arc.

A weak episode in a season that constantly charted new lows for this beloved series.
