5. The One With Fake Monica
This chapter of the show is a textbook example of forced sentiment, which comes across as cheap and fails to get you feeling anything. Who would have thought that identity theft is tricky to turn wholesome and that seeing a monkey humping stuff gets old?
Here we have two main narratives, with the first following Monica as she befriends a woman who has stolen her identity and uses her credit card. The second shows as Ross' beloved pet monkey - Marcel - reaches maturity and starts to get freaky with anything he can, leading to Ross having to find somewhere to send him.
Both of these narratives attempt to make you feel something, with Monica's trying to teach you a lesson about seizing the moment and the other acting as a tragic farewell to Marcel. Sadly, neither of them land as the severity of identity theft is tough to swallow, and the persistent monkey humping jokes come across as lazy.
There are some hidden gems in this one (such as Monica tap dancing and a somewhat emotional goodbye for Marcel), but that doesn't excuse the lacklustre writing and bizarre choices.
