10 Worst Simpsons Episodes From The Best Seasons
6. The War Of The Simpsons - Season 2
The Simpsons have done many 'Marge and Homer in a marriage crisis' features. Nowadays, it's a go to narrative when the creators are short of ideas. The War of The Simpsons is one of the earliest episodes to use this formula but it doesn't seem to work as one of the more 'mature' episodes.
The set up goes as the Simpsons are hosting a dinner party for their fellow Springfieldians. Homer gets drunk and makes a fool of himself at what should have been Marge's perfect gathering. Furious, she demands they go on a marriage counselling weekend. Homer is reluctant until he finds out the venue is near a famous fishing resort where the legendary General Sherman catfish swims.
The problem is the subject of their marriage crisis is not handled with the same realism and seriousness of episodes like "Life on the Fast Lane" or "Secrets of a Successful Marriage". Instead, it's all dealt with so clumsily.
Homer is infatuated on capturing the catfish, that he doesn't register the predicament of his crumbling relationship. There's too much focus on his obsession with fishing and not enough time devoted to resolving their feud. Once Homer catches the famous fish, Marge finds him in the act and is understandably aggravated. To prove his love, he throws the fish back in the lake and gives a forced speech about his love for Marge, to which she instantly forgives him, despite all her animosity.
Was that it - all that tension resolved in such a quick instant? An early example of sloppy writing.
