10 Worst Simpsons Episodes From The Best Seasons
3. The Simpsons Spin-Off Showcase - Season 8
Nowadays, the ‘trilogy’ episodes have become a staple of modern day Simpsons. These types of features have three non-canon stories told by family, with the family members as the characters within the story, and each segment having a linking them together. They’re almost as lazy as doing a clip show because the stories have no originality and are simply a parody of something.
The formula started off with just Halloween specials, soon to be known as the “Treehouse of Horror” episodes. They worked well for the show as a once-every-season type novelty until the producers went out of the Halloween realm to give us The Simpsons Spin-Off Showcase, thus beginning the long slog of trilogy episodes to come over the years.
In this instance, Troy McClure presents us with three spinoff shows: “Chief Wiggins, P.I.”, “The Love-Matic Grandpa” and “The Simpsons Family Smile-Time Variety Hour”. Obviously, they’re all meant to be satirical spoofs and they’re all enjoyable enough but overall, it’s just nothing to get excited about. There’s no character development, no real sense of adventure and frankly, not enough comedy.
Furthermore, there is a slight irony of how the purpose was to poke fun at TV shows going well past their prime, and yet The Simpsons was about to go the same way just a few episodes later.
