10 Worst Things Lisa Simpson Has Ever Done
1. Her Defence Of Apu
Recently, there’s been some debate over whether Apu constitutes a racist stereotype, and whether he should be retired from the show. Most people agree that he isn’t, and he shouldn’t.
The point is, in the episode No Good Read Goes Unpunished, The Simpsons choose to defend their position, and they use Lisa as the mouthpiece. Lisa turns directly to the camera (and nods to a picture of Apu to fully destroy any subtlety) to address the audience. In a patronising tone, she unloads some word salad about attitudes changing and people looking for offence.
Whether you feel Apu is racist or the debate is ridiculous is irrelevant here; the point is, Lisa would never, ever be the one to talk down to the little guy standing up for social justice.
It’s the biggest evidence yet that the show often uses her as their own mouthpiece, but here they contradict themselves. The set up for this fourth wall break is an old children’s book which plainly is racist, and the fact Lisa hardly bats an eye is damning.
Make no doubt about it; Lisa’s soul was ripped out a while ago. All that’s left now is a plot device husk.
