8. Gunther - Friends

Slightly different to the others in the category, but still side-lined nonetheless. The character Gunther is a recurring character in Friends; he is the manager of the coffee shop Central Perk and often appears in episodes solely as a figure with an infatuation with Rachel Green. It is rare that his lines will have no relation to Rachel, and there is literally no other purpose for his character outside of his love for her throughout all 10 seasons. The character was set up to be a potentially valuable aspect in the hilarity of the sitcom, though never got explored further than his infatuation, and what's more the audience was never introduced to him outside of his occupation. He existed for two reasons only - to fill the role of the waiter in the coffee shop, and to reinforce Rachel's glamorous ambiance.
