11 Great Doctor Who Moments The Writers Chickened Out Of

10. The Doctor Becoming A Woman

There were definitely a few naysayers who didn't like the idea of a 'Lady Doctor', and others who shared genuine concerns (this writer included) about the implications of changing a seemingly fundamental aspect of the show. Despite this, there was still genuine excitement around Jodie Whittaker becoming the first woman to officially take up the role of The Doctor, and this was only heightened after a strong first episode.

Then the scriptwriters chickened out in the most lame way imaginable, not even addressing that the new Doctor's gender had changed. Hell, there wasn't even a joke or a quick glance in a mirror to acknowledge the moment. Her companions didn't even find out she was once in a male body until recently.

One aspect that had been emphasised strongly in the Tennant era in particular was that the Doctor often held back from saying how he truly felt- remember the Doctor unable to tell Rose he loved her? Changing the Time Lord's gender seemed like a bold way to address this topic, even if the most likely answer was that her changed appearance made no difference to her actions whatsoever.

The fact this wasn't even addressed was a poor decision and a real waste. Instead the writers wimped out and made the changed gender a non issue, rather than the exploration and celebration it should have been.
