11 Great Things You Only Notice Rewatching Deadwood

2. The Gold Dictates Everything

Garret Dillahunt Deadwood

Every season, every episode, and every character's actions can be traced back to gold or 'the colour' as Hearst puts it. With the exception of Al, every main character in Deadwood is only there because of the gold rush.

Every immoral deed done by the sseries' antagonist is motivated by acquiring more of the gold. Every business founded in the town is first done to cater to the prospectors migrating to the town. Every advancement within the town is made because of the gold.

Gold lies at the epicentre of the town transforming from a loosely cobbled together settlement into a small but thriving town where every resident works together for a common goal; which is essentially what the show is all about.
