Emma is clearly the heroine of the show and despite her illness, she is willing to explore and experience all of the normal actions and social norms of any other teenager. So when they all decided to jump off that cliff into the water, you just knew that something was going to happen to her. But even, then Norman's attitude towards Cody - his love interest at the time - was entirely unexpected: he was vicious, degrading and over protective, much to the delight of Emma at this point. But Emma has an interest in both of the brothers so naturally, she also turned to Dylan for help when she had that coughing fit in season 3 and had to ask him to beat on her chest to get rid of the phlegm. Whilst these actions might not seem shocking compared to the other events of the show, it's shocking to see how sufferers of Cystic Fibrosis live. If you're not familiar with the disease it can be uncomfortable to watch and even if you are, it's never going to be nice watching a teenager carry around an oxygen tank talking about how they don't have long left to live.
