11 TV Moments Everyone Was Waiting For (That Never Happened)

9. Ted Ending Up With The Mother - How I Met Your Mother

The show may have been called How I Met Your Mother, but the ending proved it was never really about that. With one final, poorly-handled twist, HIMYM instead became How I Get Back Together With Your Aunt Robin, much to the ire of its fanbase. After nine seasons it wasn't just that we wanted to see Ted meet the Mother, but actually explore a little bit of their relationship too, or at the very least have that be the endpoint of the show.

Instead, Ted meets the mother, and then in a lightning-flash of a montage we're told they got married, had kids, and then she got sick and died. And that's it. There's hardly time to take any of that in before he's running off to present Robin with a blue french horn, and it's the execution, not the idea itself, that really rankles.

How I Met Your Mother was already dragging things out by that point, but given how perfect Cristin Milioti's performance was, fans wanted to properly see her and Ted be together. It was, so we'd been told, the point of the show. And then it wasn't.
