12 Anime That Make You Root For The Villain

1. Attack On Titan - Pretty Much Everyone

Attack on Titan is, arguably, the anime of the decade. While some people have felt cheated by the Final Season so far, it's still a phenomenal series with compelling characters, excellent writing and breathtaking action. Still, one thing it's missing is binary heroes and villains. Because, in AOT, good and evil do not exist.

The entire show explores the horror and futility of war; as such, barely anyone acts like a hero. The best example is the lead protagonist Eren Jaeger. At first, he seems like a clear-cut good guy, fighting for those he loves and trying to get revenge on the Titans. But, in the latest season, he has transitioned into a full-on villain with plans of mass genocide. No matter what way you spin in, trying to destroy the world is the work of an evildoer.

It's not just Eren, though, as plenty of characters have a non-binary moral complex. Jean started as an arrogant antagonist and is now a courageous hero. Reiner went from being an awesome supporting character to a primary villain to an emotionally complex anti-hero. If you root for anyone in this show, you're rooting for the villain of someone's story.

Overall, the lines between good and evil are so blurred because war doesn't have good guys and bad guys, just people doing what they "have to" or are forced to.
