12 Best Animated Superhero TV Shows Of All Time

2. Spider-Man (1994)

Batman The Animated Series
Marvel

We've seen many animated depictions of Marvel's wall-crawler over the years and only one of them has managed to eclipse that iconic '60s offering, and that is the incomparable '90s series.

With its own electrified variation of the Spider-Man theme song, this 1994 series followed the adventures of Peter Parker's web-slinging wonder as he battled many of his nemeses for the first ever time, including the likes of the Kingpin, the Green Goblin, Venom, the Chameleon and the Hobgoblin, and (of course) he had to do it while juggling being a high school student and a photographer for the Daily Bugle.

Yes, there really was an endless supply of classic villains over the course of the show's five seasons, but the most impressive thing about all of it was how well their introductions were woven into the ongoing narrative. That's right, the show may have utilised the villain-of-the-week format, but there was nothing plot-of-the-week about these episodes, as the show told one cohesive overarching storyline.

There was a maturity about the series that we weren't used to seeing in mainstream animated shows at the time. It wasn't afraid of venturing into dark territory in order to explore stories revolving around the likes of Venom and Carnage, and it still managed to remain grounded in its approach as it did so. And while we're talking about the strength of the writing, it's an absolute credit to the show that the writers managed to utilise voiceover the whole way through without ever coming off as expositional.

An era-defining show for so many, this is Spider-Man at his very best.
