12 Best Animated Superhero TV Shows Of All Time

6. Batman Beyond

Batman The Animated Series
Warner Bros.

When Batman: The Animated Series' groundbreaking run came to an end, the-powers-that-be behind the DCAU decided they weren't done with The Dark Knight's story just yet, and with that, they commissioned one of the most unique, innovative and downright cool animated shows to ever grace TV screens.

Batman Beyond (or Batman Of The Future as it was known in the UK) was a spin-off sequel set in the future of the DCAU, introducing fans to a tech-heavy, cyberpunk iteration of Gotham City in which a young Terry McGinnis carries on Bruce Wayne's legacy as the new Batman.

It was different, and those differences were reflected in the tone of the show, as most of its primary characters were teenagers - and this ultimately allowed it to tackle a completely different set of storylines than any of its predecessors.

With a future full of possibilities and a horde of new and innovative villains at their disposal, the creative minds behind the original animated series' venture into uncharted territory was a highly fruitful one, as Batman Beyond explored darker themes and leaned heavily on science fiction elements in its bid to keep long-time fans invested - and this allowed it carve out its own legacy and contribute to the Batman mythology in a way that the comics just never could. And the return of Kevin Conroy as the cranky aged Bruce Wayne was the icing on the cake.
