It is undeniable that Star Trek is one of the most important Sci-Fi TV shows of all time, influencing viewers with its messages of hope, companionship, and possible unified futures for almost forty years. So it's quite surprising that one of the deadliest episodes of the acclaimed TV show is in fact the series premiere.

In the series premiere, the crew of the USS Enterprise approaches the edge of our galaxy, which is surrounded by a mysterious force field that severely damaged the Enterprise when they tried to pass through.

This accident kills nine crew members instantly and turns two other crew members into telepathic gods. Since those crew members stopped associating with the rest of their human companions, they killed another crew member aboard the Enterprise before engaging in a climactic battle with Captain Kirk, resulting in their rather tragic deaths.

For a TV show about going to where no man has gone before and meeting new civilizations, twelve people suffering horrific deaths deep in the unforgiving void of space is a weird way to start such a classic series off.
