Graduation day is one of the most important days in the life of any normal person. While the entire event is arguably meant more for family members, students always feel a sense of pride in surviving high school and graduating. Of course in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, surviving graduation was taken quite literally.

This was due to the corruption of the Mayor of Sunnydale, who wanted to become a full-blooded demon and live forever, as most mayors are want to do.

The mayor gathered an army of vampires and the second slayer Faith to ensure that Buffy and her Scooby gang could not get in the way of his ascension. However, the mayor failed to understand that most of the graduating students each owed their lives to Buffy, and were unwilling to be eaten without a fight.

In the end, the graduating class of 1999 ended up becoming one of the first armies Buffy commanded into battle. Graduation finally ended, though, and due to many students dying during the battle, that group would go on to have the lowest mortality rate of any graduating class in Sunnydale.
