11. Batman €“ Batman: The Animated Series

In the classic episode 'The Man Who Killed Batman', the caped crusader had presumably, as the episode title suggests, been killed. Told through the past escapades of two-bit crook Sidney, we discover that he got into a struggle with Batman during a drug run. Gotham's hero is killed in an explosion and a triumphant Sidney emerges, holding Batman's cape and cowl and goes on to become the infamous killer and hero of Gotham's criminal underworld. Considering the class of criminals in Gotham; The Joker, Two Face, The Riddler, Poison Ivy et all, Sidney receives high praise indeed, until he's lured into a trap by the Joker and Harley Quinn in the most bizarre funeral tribute to Batman of them all (Harley even plays Amazing Grace on a kazoo!). Of course, Sidney's luck doesn't end there and he manages to escape the acid bath the Joker has planned for him. It's only at the end that Batman reappears, seemingly unscathed from his encounter with Sidney and an observer to Sidney's exploits since his death. In a rather sentimental turn of events, Batman has allowed poor Sidney to take the credit for his death and for managing to outwit the Joker (Batman saves him from the acid bath), making him the toast of the prison scene. It shows a different side to Batman; he still puts Sidney in prison for his criminal activities, but in a world of larger-than-life super villains, he has allowed the little man to become the hero, even if he is on the wrong side!
