8. The League of Gentlemen

The residents of Royston Vasey are the stuff of acid-induced nightmares; once you've seen Tubbs breastfeeding a pig the image is stuck in your head for life. As is the scene where an incompetent vet inserts his arm into the wrong hole when trying to birth a cow, and accidentally disembowels it. Perversely, this mental trauma was the exact reason why the show was a must; when it comes to WTF moments The League of Gentlemen made Breaking Bad look like an episode of Friends. The grotesque horror was retold and debated with gleeful disgust after each episode because The League's twisted powers of imagination veered towards genius. Then, in the noughties, Papa Lazarou arrived and many shaken viewers gave serious consideration to counselling. Most quoted line: "This is a local shop for local people." (Tubbs and Edward)
