12 British Comedy Shows You Absolutely Had To Watch In The '90s

7. Vic Reeves' Big Night Out

This was the cult programme that launched Vic Reeves and Bob Mortimer onto the unsuspecting public and once you'd stopped scratching your heads, you started to fall in love. Almost 25 years later it's still revered and still stands alone in terms of sheer lunacy. Vic Reeves' Big Night Out was a surreal journey into highly imaginative chaos. Fans may not always have got the joke, but they were obsessed with the show because it was original and unpredictable right up until the shocking (and murderous) finale. For some, the slapstick and silliness was king; for others it was the underlying darkness which slowly built-up throughout the series. But regardless of where comedy preferences lay, there was one thing everyone adored about the series: the two stars. The innate appeal of Vic and Bob was so strong that it spread fairly quickly to an older, mainstream audience. Which meant it wasn't too long before they were being favourably, and inexplicably, compared to Morecambe and Wise. Most quoted line: "What's at the end of the stick, Vic?"
