Running from 1994 to 97, Gargoyles is one of those cartoons that you have definitely seen, even if its not the first to pop into your head. A smartly written show, Gargoyles goes into depths of mythology not usually found in your average kids cartoon. The show even incorporates Shakespearian characters, with a slightly different slant. The Gargoyles are the guardian-angels of Manhattan. During the day they turn to stone, keeping watch over the city from their lordy heights. But at night they come alive, fighting crime and evil wherever they find it. Originally from ancient Scotland, the Gargoyles and their leader Goliath are helped in their battles by young N.Y.P.D officer Elisa Maza. What makes Gargoyles great though is the gargantuan scope of its myths and legends. With different clans, and clans of clones, Gargoyles invests heavily in the world it has created. Throw in flying-fight scenes and swashbuckling sword sequences and youve got a pretty amazing kids TV show.
