12 Emotional TV Moments That Made Us All Cry In 2013

7. The Newsroom - Maggie Goes To Africa

It's no secret that Maggie Jordan was once the most insufferable and poorly written character in The Newsroom when the show was first getting its feet wet two years ago. The whole will-they-won't-they sexual tension between Maggie and Jim and the love triangle with Don was pretty unpleasant to watch and the degree of stereotypical blonde ditziness written into her character was breathtaking, from as minor as the whole James Tiberius Harper gag to as incredible as sending a funeral sentiment with LOL at the end (you know, for lots of love). That being one of the many criticisms of the Emmy winning show's freshman season, creator Aaron Sorkin seemed to listen to a lot of said criticism and delivered on a pretty great second season, although I do wish they hadn't gotten rid of that first theme song. Will McAvoy's character got much better writing and secured Jeff Daniels a surprise Emmy for outstanding lead actor, and Maggie's character got much more depth and darkness which didn't secure her an Emmy nomination but was definitely a step in the right direction. In season two we see a Maggie Jordan with a dark aura and a horrible perm surrounding her, and we find out early on that it had something to do with an ill-fated trip to Africa. It turned out that Maggie went on a trip to Uganda for a special report and a young boy had taken a liking to her and her blonde hair. Late at night, her host village was raided by gunmen who wanted their camera and equipment, and the boy was shot while Maggie carried him in her arms. The bullet was meant for her, which led her to cut and dye the hair that the boy had loved so much, and Maggie had been on a downward spiral ever since. The scene where Maggie reads to the boy on the bus after escaping, only to find out that it was a dream and he was bleeding out in Maggie's arms is arguably the most heart wrenching scene in the entire series.
