12 Genius Decisions By Star Trek Captains

8. Janeway Decides To Trust The Borg... Kinda

Captain Katherine Janeway was one of the most resourceful captains in Starfleet. Stranded, with her crew, in the Delta Quadrant, Janeway had to deal with obstacles that no other captain could imagine. Arguably her greatest hurdle was navigating a huge expanse of Borg space as she leads her crew back to Earth.

Janeway did what she had to do. She forged an uneasy alliance with the Borg Collective. She even promised to help defeat one of the Borg's most fearsome rivals.

This may seem like was a stupid decision since Janeway could have let the Borg's enemies destroy them. But, that would leave her no closer to achieving her goal of getting her crew home as quickly as possible.

Waiting out a prolonged war between two advanced species was not an option for Janeway, but dealing with the Borg wasn’t ideal either. Janeway knew she couldn’t trust the little, cyborg jerks. So, she played them like a ukulele. As soon the Borg prevails in their war they, predictably, turn on the Voyager crew and Seven Of Nine attempts to assimilate the consoles.

But, Janeway anticipated this betrayal and activates a contingency plan - "Operation Scorpion" - which sees Chakotay, under her instructions, use a neural relay to distract Seven while Torres electrifies the console, knocking Seven out. So the Captain used an uneasy alliance to the benefit of the crew while keeping her mind focuses on the likelihood of the betrayal.
