12 Genius Decisions By Star Trek Captains

7. Sisko Decides To Poison A Planet

Before the start of the Dominion war Starfleet’s biggest concern was the Maquis. One of the Maquis’s most effective lieutenants was the former Starfleet officer Michael Eddington. Starfleet orders Benjamin Sisko to capture Eddington.

Complicating matters, Eddington was formerly Sisko’s security chief on board Deep Space Nine. They have a history, and Eddington takes advantage of his relationship with Sisko.

Eddington knows that, as a Starfleet captain, Sisko has to abide by certain limits. These are boundaries that Eddington doesn’t have. He proves this by poisoning the atmospheres of several Cardassian planets.

Sisko outsmarts Eddington by doing the opposite of what his former security chief expects. Sisko fights fire with fire. In an act that would make Picard cringe, Sisko poisons the atmosphere of a Maquis colony. It’s a bold move that forces Eddington to concede defeat.
