12 Huge TV Industry Changes Coming In 2014

9. More Foreign Leads

One consequence of Hollywood pumping out more shows is that it needs more talent to fill lead roles. That means poaching talent from other nations, like Britain, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. Which is good for the actors, because they're getting paid more (since demand is up), and good for US audiences, who get exposed to a wider stable of actors than they normally would. Right now, things are pretty safe when it comes to the big names from those countries €“ all they have to worry about are their favorite actors jumping ship for movies, then coming back to do their shows. The biggest names of non-American leads on TV include Robert Carlyle, Karl Urban, and Tom Mison, who range from fairly well known to near total unknown. We're not at the point where anyone has to worry about Peter Capaldi being lured away from Dr. Who partway through his second or third season/series. But if this trend continues for a few years, we might have to deal with such a situation.
