12 Huge TV Industry Changes Coming In 2014

5. Sony Streaming TV

Speaking of cutting the cord, Sony announced at the Consumer Electronics Show that they are going to set up a TV service that streams live and on-demand programs. It'll go into testing later this year and will include digital recording service, but nothing beyond that and a few of Sony's partners (Viacom and MLB Advanced Media). If it works, you'll have to subscribe to Sony's service (and probably pay some sort of fee), but you'll be able to get anything anywhere, which seems like a nice deal. Of course, there are a lot of hurdles for Sony to overcome. The first one is getting the parent companies of all the networks to join in this plan. The second is an infrastructure issue, but MLB Advanced Media is reportedly helping Sony on that front, so things might work properly on day one. Third is getting the service to stream HD media to multiple devices at once without using up excessive amounts of bandwidth. And fourth is the price of the service. If Sony's stream is anywhere near the price of a premium TV package ($50+), people probably aren't going to switch. In fact, several cable companies that double as ISPs already have streaming apps of their own. How is Sony going to compete with something that people already have? Maybe giving subscribers Playstation Now (their streaming emulation system for PS1 through PS3 games) for free? No matter what happens, it'll be interesting to see how this shakes the TV industry.
