Seven of Nine has recently returned to the franchise and in the opening moments of her appearance on Picard, she loses Icheb, her surrogate son, in a horrific and violent manner. It was not, however, the first time she lost a child. In the fifth season of Voyager, Seven is mother to, raises and then loses a child, all in the space of one episode. Recurring guest actor J.

Paul Boehmer appears as One, a drone with technology from the 29th century, formed by a transporter accident. Clearly, Seven is the best candidate to teach him to embrace individuality.

He is surprisingly receptive to being one rather than part of the Collective, though he is curious and inadvertently summons them to assimilate him. His self-sacrifice skewers Seven through the heart. She desperately tries to convince him to allow them to help him survive his injuries but he knows he is a danger if he remains. Seven's teachings taught him the importance of family, something that Seven herself struggled with for almost her entire first year on the ship.

If children are a reflection of their parents, then his death and insistence that the ship and Seven survive is an example of the very best of humanity and maternal care. Though he exists for only the briefest time, One reflects Seven's own feelings of hope and sadness. When he dies, she is One again, yet part of a family still.
