12 Most INSANE Star Trek Theories
8. The Transporter Kills Anyone Who Uses It
This remains of the most enduring and existential Trek theories of all time. Let's delve in.
How exactly do Star Trek's transporters work? Well, the official explanation is that they convert a subject’s constituent matter into energy, beam that energy to another destination, then reassemble it in its original form. Pretty simple, right?
Wrong! Very, very wrong!
While this technology seems impossible enough as it is, many argue that even if it existed, it would be especially impossible to convert a person's matter into energy without killing them. This theory posits that every time a person is transported, they are destroyed, and a perfect clone is created in their place. This clone doesn't even realise it's a clone, as it is perfectly made and has all the memories of the original person implanted.
This may explain why some characters, such as Bones, are famously afraid of using the transporter, worried that having their atoms scattered everywhere just can't be healthy.
This raises an interesting philosophical question, however: even if this is the case, does it matter? If the clone is exactly the same as you, and contains all of your memories, then what's to stop it from being the "true" you? After all, every cell in a human's body is completely replaced on a continuous seven year cycle. The body you inhabit now doesn't contain any of the same cells or materials it did seven years ago, but you're still the "true" you...
Aren't you...?
