7. Angela Martine Had A Death Wish

Shore Leave is quite the revealing episode of Star Trek: TOS. As the crew of the Enterprise holiday on a mysterious planet, they have no idea that they are actually visiting a highly advanced amusement park, designed to let visitors experience their deepest desires.

These desires tell us a lot about the individual crew members. Some are innocent enough: Yeoman Barrows just wants to live the life of a princess. Others are more insidious: Bones wants to spend some "quality time" with two Cabaret chorus girls, while Kirk desires nothing more than to beat up an Irishman.

Crew member Angela Martine, on the other hand, may have had the most upsetting desire of all.

Throughout the episode, we see both Bones and Martine seemingly die: Bones is jousted to death by a medieval knight, while Martine is gunned down by a Japanese fighter aircraft.

The episode ends with Bones reappearing, explaining that he has been healed by the mysterious aliens running the amusement park. However, Martine does not receive a similar scene, and we are left unsure as to whether she survived or not.

As upsetting as it is, one theory suggests that Martine's deepest desire was to not be brought back to life, and the amusement park honoured her wishes. Unfortunately, this actually adds up: she never appears in the series again after this, and the only previous episode she appeared in was focused on the death of her fiancé on their wedding day.

The worst part? Nobody seems to realise she's missing - not even the writers, apparently.
