How this does not get remembered as one of the finest fantasy shows of recent times is baffling. Largely due to an incredibly unlucky, forced network change, the show suffered such a sharp drop in ratings on its second season, the whole thing had to be cancelled afterwards.

It all kicks off with the Elven princess Amberle Elessedil, who becomes the first woman to win the honour of serving on a sacred order tasked with protecting the magical Ellcrys tree.

However just as she is settling into her duty, the elves realize their sacred tree is dying. The Ellcrys’ rapidly accelerating demise does however cause the awakening of Allanon, a powerful wizard and the last of the Druid Order.

Realizing the direness of the situation, Allanon recruits the one man who can stop all this, Wil Ohmsford. The son of the legendary Shannara who once saved the world from evil, Wil reluctantly accepts his father’s magical heirloom from Allanon and joins him on his quest.

This brings him face to face with Amberle and the rover thief Eritria, as they form a group that while starts out as divided and bitter, eventually grows into a family. Except for Wil and Amberle who grow into something of a more intimate variety.

Standing opposite the good guys are devilish foes wielding enormous, potentially world ending power. Some of them, like the Dagda Mor of season 1 are demons imprisoned in a hellish dimension with the Ellcrys serving as the lock. While others like the Warlock Lord are evil shadows from the past who even in death continue to plot the destruction of the world.

The show may never have reached the lofty heights it had the potential for, but take absolutely nothing away from how good the Shannara Chronicles was on all fronts and how well it portrayed Terry Brooks’ iconic Shannara books.

After battling Galactus and pinning Hulk Hogan in the main event of Wrestlemania, I've taken a break from living in fantasy worlds, to focus on writing about them. I'm a comic book geek, a wrestling mark, a break dancer, and a scientist. One of those things may not be true.
