10. Black Lightning

Stepping into the superhero realm for this one, Black Lightning was of the shows to have gone well and truly beyond the common tropes and create a product that not only showcased a thrilling story, but also did not pretend it was happening in a social vacuum where real life societal problems didn’t exist.

Jefferson Pierce is a school principal with a past life as the electricity generating superhero Black Lightning. When the rising crime rate claims his daughter as a victim, he decides enough and is enough and puts on the suit one more time.

From there on, we see Jefferson take on the root of all the problems, a gang named the 100 and their leader Tobias Whale. As you can imagine, the evils he faces don’t just come dressed in suits and carrying guns, they also come in the form of systemic racism, power abuse and family strife. A true masterpiece that not unlike a lot of our societal problems, doesn’t get the attention it deserved.
