12 Saddest Bojack Horseman Episodes
9. Escape From L.A. - S2E11
Towards the conclusion of season two, BoJack didn't like the version of himself that lived in L.A., and he was struggling to cope with his work on Secretariat. To try and escape from his life he took a trip to New Mexico to see Charlotte, and spent two months with her and the family he didn't know she had.
This is one of the most iconic episodes, and most important moments in BoJack's entire life. After Penny had no one to go to the prom with, BoJack stepped in, and ultimately got her and her friends drunk. When Maddy clearly had alcohol poisoning, BoJack abandoned her with Pete at the hospital, in a shocking display of how far he is willing to go to protect himself and save his own skin.
In fairness to him, when Penny first came on to him he did the right thing, but after speaking to Charlotte and getting knocked back by her, he let Penny into his bed. Who knows what would have happened had they not been interrupted.
The saddest part of this episode wasn't the obvious mistake that BoJack made, but was the fact that he had never been so sure of anything as how he felt about Charlotte, and how he thought she felt about him, yet he was still wrong. He was basically told by his former friend that no matter where he was in the world, he would always be the problem. He can't just escape from that.
